Landfills — what’s bad about them?

Landfills today are significantly bigger than they were just a few decades ago. Municipal solid waste is often packed tightly into blocks before being stacked into a landfill, and covered with many layers — including a landscaped layer of soil and grass with small chimneys to help landfill gasses escape. A full landfill can look just like a grassy hill, which doesn’t sound very threatening, but the garbage underneath will last for generations.

A toxic mess

Landfills produce significant amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas, along with leachate, a toxic liquid that leaks out of all that compressed trash. Many safeguards are in place to keep toxic liquid from escaping a full landfill, but over time, these safeguards can break down or deteriorate.

Living near an unsightly landfill isn’t just unpleasant — it can be a risk for your health. Even living within a few kilometres of a waste site is known to cause respiratory illnesses, and having a landfill near your home has also been linked to an increased risk of developing certain types of cancer.
