A Circular Economy for Waste

At Sustane, we’re on a mission to improve waste circularity, materially reduce GHG emissions, and have a global impact.

Clean technology solutions like ours, which address environmental problems such as single-use and end-of-life plastic waste, help reduce the impacts of climate change and create a sustainable economy for future generations.

The 5 R’s…and Sustane

Did you know that Canadians throw away over 3.5 million tonnes of plastic waste every year and that only 9% is actually recycled? The rest ends up in landfills or the environment, threatening the health of wildlife, rivers, lakes, and oceans.

While certain types of plastics can be replaced with bio-degradable alternatives, single-use plastics play a critical role in health care and food safety, among other things.

Sustane is focused on improving waste circularity, by repurposing single-use and end-of-life plastics into alternative fuels used in the production of new plastics. Alternative fuels are used in place of fossil fuels, resulting in more sustainable products.

Fewer Landfills, Fewer Emissions

We can reduce the number of new landfills needed by reducing the amount and type of waste that is sent to them, thereby preventing toxic methane emissions and leachate runoff.

Sustane’s innovative approach to waste management is complementary to traditional municipal waste management programs, and helps municipalities reach their climate goals. Through the prevention of 3 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions for every tonne of garbage processed, we reduce a community’s overall carbon footprint by 10 per cent.

FAQ

How does your process work?

Our proprietary mechanized process uses steam to recycle 90 per cent of household waste, transforming it into alternative fuels for new plastics and organic fertilizer.

What type of materials can you recycle?

We process all types of household waste, as well as single-use and end-of-life plastics.

Where do you get your waste?

We partner with businesses and the local municipalities that pay a tipping fee to have their waste processed, at a comparable cost to landfilling but with added benefits and fewer emissions.

What products do you produce?

Sustane recycles household waste into alternative fuels for new plastics and organic fertilizer.

For example, our CFIA certified GroBoost Fertilizer is produced with lower carbon intensity than traditional chemical fertilizers, improves soil health, and significantly mitigates chemical fertilizer run-off in fields.

What size of community is your ideal target?

Our scalable approach means we are able to meet the needs of communities with population bases of 150,000 or greater.

Shouldn’t we be making less plastic, not more?

While certain types of plastics can be replaced with bio-degradable alternatives, single-use plastics play a critical role in health care and food safety, among other things.

Sustane is focused on improving waste circularity, by repurposing single-use and end-of-life into alternative fuels used in the production of new plastics. Alternative fuels are used in place of fossil fuels, resulting in more sustainable products.

Does your technology reduce GHG emissions?

Our innovative approach reduces a community’s overall carbon footprint by up to 10 per cent through the prevention of up to 3 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions for every tonne of garbage processed.

For example, our commercial demonstration facility in Chester, NS is designed to process 70,000 tonnes of household waste each year, which will prevent more than 200,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions, the equivalent of taking roughly 50,000 cars off the road.

Will your technology phase out landfills?

There will always be a need for landfills, but we can reduce the amount and type of waste that is sent to them, preventing methane emissions and toxic leachate runoff.
